Fioricet is a common prescription drug used by doctors and health care professionals today in the treatment of migraine pain. Fioricet is one of two brand name products (the other being Esgic) made from a combination of acetaminophen, butalbital (a barbituate), and caffeine, which have been found to be effective in the reduction of migraine discomfort. Taken early on at the first sign of migraine onset, along with rest and quiet, should give you a jumpstart on relieving the symptoms of a migraine.
If you suffer from chronic headaches, you are not alone - the National Headache Foundation estimates that about 45 million Americans suffer from recurring headaches. People who suffer from recurring headaches (migraines) respond differently to treatment options, which range from meditation to drug therapy. Trying to find the best treatment is no simple matter. Patience and the willingness to try several different methods may be necessary to find what works best for you.
The pain of a migraine headache is often described as an intense throbbing or pounding pain on one or both sides of the head. The pain is often accompanied by extreme sensitivity to lights, sounds and smells, as well as the presence of nausea, and vomiting. Up to a third of individuals who have these headaches will experience a warning sign that a migraine is about to start.
Some individuals can predict the onset of a migraine because it is preceded by an "aura" as related to visual disturbances such as dimmed or flashing lights, zig-zag lines or a temporary loss of vision. Others experience unusual sensations such as tingling in their hands, feet or face.
People with migraines tend to have recurring attacks triggered by a lack of food or sleep, exposure to light, or hormonal irregularities. Anxiety, stress, or relaxation after stress can also be triggers. For many years, scientists believed that migraines were linked to the dilation and constriction of blood vessels in the head. Investigators now believe that migraines are caused by inherited abnormalities in genes that control the activities of certain cell populations in the brain. Of note, migraines are three times more common in women than in men. Generally speaking, migraines are infrequent, although they may be chronic for some individuals.
Prescription medications offer two ways to approach the treatment of migraine headaches. They can prevent the attacks, and/or relieve the symptoms during the attacks. Many people who experience migraine headaches use both approaches. Patients can take medications originally developed for epilepsy and depression to prevent future attacks, while also targeting attacks when they happen with other drugs called triptans that relieve pain and restore function. Hormone therapy may help some women whose migraines seem to be linked to their menstrual cycle. Stress management strategies, such as exercise, relaxation, biofeedback, and other therapies designed to help limit discomfort, may also reduce the occurrence and severity of migraine attacks.

The prognosis for living with migraines is good. Taking a combination of drugs to prevent and treat migraine attacks when they happen helps most people with migraines to limit the disabling effects of these headaches. Women whose migraine attacks occur in association with their menstrual cycle are likely to have fewer attacks and milder symptoms after menopause.
