Hair Loss Treatments and Information
What is hair loss and what should I do about it?
|
Male pattern hair loss (also known as male pattern balding or androgenetic alopecia) is the most common form of hair loss (it is caused by excessive amounts of the chemical DHT), representing close to 95% of all cases of hair loss in men. Male hair loss can be difficult and embarrassing. However, there are many treatments out there, to help combat whatever type of baldness you may be experiencing. Whether you have a receding hairline or just thinning hair in general, finding the right solution can be difficult and often times confusing. Hairloss treatments range from natural hair regrowth treatments, which usually come in pill form, like propecia (or creams like rogaine) to more drastic forms of hair restoration like hair implants. Whatever your final choice may be, it is important to first consult a dermatologist and second use only clinically tested treatments.
Hair Loss Treatments
- Procerin "blocks DHT without reacting with testosterone (as some prescription medications do). This reduces, and can even halt, the further loss of hair from the scalp, without causing the sexual side effects of prescription drugs like finasteride (Propecia)."
- Propecia "is the only once-a-day pill that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of certain types of hair loss in men. And most importantly, it's been demonstrated to be generally effective in FDA-reviewed clinical trials to maintain or improve hair count in most men."
- Men's Rogaine Extra Strength has been proven to regrow hair and is one of the most popular hair loss treatments.
- Revivogen "is a dermatologist-formulated, all-natural solution for hair loss and thinning hair. It's made from nature's most powerful ingredients and is designed to attack the causes of hair loss effectively and safely."
Hair Cycle
At any point, around 10% of the hair on your scalp is in a resting phase (an intermediate phase of the hair growth cycle during which the hair stops growing and rests for an average of 10 days before heading into the telogen phase). After two to three months, the resting hair falls out and a new wave of hair starts to grow in its place. This growing phase lasts for two to six years. Each hair grows about one centimeter every month during this phase. About 90% of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. However, some people may experience excessive (more than normal) loss. This can affect men, women and children.
The term "common baldness" generally refers male-pattern baldness, or permanent-pattern baldness. Male-pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. Men who experience this type usually have inherited the trait. Men who start losing their hair at an early age tend to develop more extensive baldness. In male-pattern baldness, hair loss typically results in a receding hairline and baldness on the top of the head. Women may also develop female-pattern baldness. In this form, the hair becomes thin over the entire scalp.
There are many treatments as was listed above, however, the type of treatment that should be used completely depends on the type of hair loss. If medication is causing your baldness, your doctor should be able to prescribe a different medicine. Also, recognizing and treating an infection may help stop the hair loss. Finally, correcting a hormone imbalance may prevent further hair loss. What is Common Baldness?
