While insurance is not really a modern entity, in today's society the need for many types of insurance such as homeowners insurance, automobile insurance, health insurance, and life insurance, is an integral fact of life for most of us. Insurance provides a safety net when luck runs out. From Babylonian times (where caravan owners insured against maurading robbers) to the present, insurance has evolved and now includes other forms that we often overlook as being "insurance," such as Social Security, Workman's Compensation, and Unemployment Compensation, in addition to the previously mentioned types.

Today, you can insure almost anything: injury to a dancer's legs, a pianist's fingers, or against rain on the day of an important game. But most of us only need homeowners, automobile, health and life policies. Choosing one company to handle all of your policies is a smart move, as you will receive discounts on all of them if they are through the same company. And most of us are interested in saving money.
Changing Insurance Needs--Past and Present
In pioneer times, if a man's log cabin burned down he went out to the forest, chopped down a few trees and rebuilt his home. His "car" was a horse or horse and wagon, his boat a canoe, and if he had an RV, it was a covered wagon. If the man got sick or hurt, the country doctor took care of him, and often took his fee in chickens or other crops from the garden, or he would be willing to wait until the man could pay him in cash. If the pioneer man died, his wife and children would have to fend for themselves. That often meant losing the land because they couldn't pay for it, and having to move in relatives. Maybe the "good old days" weren't so good after all!
Today we have many forms of insurance today to protect ourselves and our families. Most people will find the following types of insurance a necessity:
1. Homeowners insurance. Protects against loss due to fire or other disasters. The policy should cover the home itself as well as the contents.
2. Automobile insurance. It's mandatory in many areas, and will protect you against loss due to accident, fire or theft.
3. Health insurance. With the high cost of medical care today, some form of health insurance will protect your assets in the event of a major medical emergency, and depending on the coverage, even routine medical care will cost you less.
4. Life insurance. In the event of the death of the policy holder, the remaining family members will be protected financially.
There are other forms of insurance that may not be needed by all of us, such as renter's insurance if we are not homeowners, travel insurance, business insurance, other types of health insurance, and even pet insurance.
