Contact Lens: Discussion of Various Brands and Eyesight Problems
Variations in Contact Lenses and Prices
|
Our eyes are intricate sensory organs. They are designed to optimize vision under conditions of varying light. Their location on our body, and their exposure to everyday life, leaves them susceptible to trauma, environmental chemicals and particles, and infectious agents. Many Americans struggle with various issues with their eyesight. These problems range from being nearsighted and farsighted, to partial blindness. Less severe forms of eyesight problems can be helped with glasses or contact lenses. Companies like Lens Crafters or Acuvue provide a wide array of products for consumers to use.

The Basics of the Eye
The surface of the eyes (cornea) operates as a lens. One has perfect sight when the image is brought into sharp focus on the back surface of the eye (retina). When the image is not accurately focused on the back of the eye and/or vision is blurred vision problems can occur. The standard method for correcting sight is to prescribe glasses or contact lenses. The standard measure of strength, in these various products, is called a dioptres, which is correlated to the strength of a round (spherical) lens that allows the clearest possible vision.
Problems with Your Eyesight
Eyesight can be affected in a variety of ways. The first is referred to as short sight or Myopia. Short sight is hereditary and develops through the teens. It also affects around 20% of the population. Shortsightedness occurs when focusing power of your eyes is too strong. Objects at a distance appear blurred and your close up vision is clear.
Astigmatism is another issue that can affect eyesight. Astigmatism can be described as only parts of the image are correctly focused; distortion is caused at all distances. And finally one can be diagnosed with long sight. Long sight occurs when the focusing power of your eyes are too weak. You are more able to view objects, comfortably, at a distance rather than close up (less than 6 feet).
General Info about Lenses
There are many different types of contact lenses. Some are designed to change your eye color and others are used for more specific problems with your eyesight. The most commonly used lens is the soft lens, approximately 85% of contact users are soft lenses users. If you decide to purchase contact lenses, it is advised that you first consult an ophthalmologist, optometrist, or in some states, optician. This is the case even if you don't normally wear glasses, and just wish contacts to change your eye color.
It is best to consult a eye care professional before purchasing any eye products.
